The supreme aim of our Oncology Centre is the comprehensive care of tumour patients in each phase of their disease. This necessitates interdisciplinary collaboration across sectors and professional groups that enables treatment based on the guidelines of the German Cancer Society.
When the Diagnosis and Treatment Centre was built in 2006 on the grounds of the Clinic it was the crucial step in creating a complete spectrum of care with all the main treatment partners under one roof. In 2008 the Breast and Bowel Centres were certified for the first time by the German Cancer Society, and since then have been inspected at annual intervals, whereby compliance with precisely defined parameters guarantees a high standard of quality. When Dr. Franz Edler von Koch was appointed Chief Physician of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department in 2009 and Dr. Detlef Krenz was appointed Chief Physician of the General, Visceral, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Department in 2010, we acquired renowned experts from the relatively new field of minimally invasive tumour surgery. Building on a decades-long tradition emphatically promoted by the Schwesterschaft der Krankenfürsorge des Dritten Ordens, caring for cancer patients, even if a cure is no longer possible, is a great concern of hours, and we have intensified our work in developing this further in recent years.
That is why we extend our range of services from A – Z for tumour patients not only to patients with breast and bowel cancer but also to those with other malignant growths frequently diagnosed at our Clinic: gynaecological tumours, tumours of the lower oesophagus, of the stomach and the pancreas, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, malignant lymphoma and leukaemia. In the tumour conferences held several times a week the main treatment partners (surgeons, gynaecologists, gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiotherapists) involve the GPs and discuss the best possible treatment concept for each patient and bindingly stipulate further procedure. The spectrum of care is completed by integrating the nurses, the social service, the psychological services, the chaplains, physical therapy, dietary advice, art therapy and the self-help groups, true to our motto “Expertise and loving care for your health”.
